How to Pick the Right Athletic Fit Polo Shirts for Your Body Type

If you’re a bodybuilder or even just someone with a more athletic frame, going clothes shopping can be a challenge. In particular, finding polo shirts that fit every part of your body can seem impossible. You may feel like you have to get shirts that hang off you to accommodate your shoulders and arms or squeeze your chest into shirts that fit your torso.

Luckily, there are a few tips and tricks you can use to find athletic fit polo shirts. Read on to discover how to find a shirt that fits you well and shows off the body you’ve worked so hard to get. 

Pick the Right Style

When you’re trying to find a good athletic fit polo, the first thing you need to consider is the style. Polos come in a few basic styles: classic fit, slim fit, and custom fit. In general, guys with more athletic builds are going to want to go for the slim-fit polos, although the custom fit can work well, too.

Classic fit polos tend to have a much straighter profile, meaning by the time you get a shirt big enough to fit your shoulders and arms, it’s going to be swallowing your stomach. Slim-fit polos tuck in a little more below the chest, fitting closer to your waist. Custom-fit polos are somewhere in the middle and can be a good option for guys with thicker midsections or who need a little more length.

Start with the Arms 

Once you’ve picked the right style for you, you’ll want to start your polo fitting by focusing on your arms. In general, your arms are where your polo is going to fit tightest, especially if you have a more athletic build. Once you get a shirt that fits your arms, you can adjust it as needed from there.

Polo sleeves should come about halfway down your biceps and should never go more than two-thirds of the way down. They should be snug around your biceps, but not so tight that you lose blood flow or get a bicep muffin top. If you want to show off your biceps a little more, look for a polo with a ribbed band around the bottom of the sleeve that can stretch a little more and hug closer to your bicep.

Find the Right Shoulder Width

Once you find a polo that fits your arms, it’s time to turn your attention to the shoulders. Polo shirts that are too small in the shoulders will make you look like Bruce Banner after he gets angry. Polos that are too big in the shoulders will make you look like you raided your dad’s closet when you were a little kid.

The shoulder seams of your polo should sit at the points of your shoulders, right at the top of your humerus. If you have to pick between a polo that fits your arms and one that fits your shoulders, it’s better to go with the one that fits in the shoulders. You can always have the arms adjusted if needed, but moving shoulder seams can get complicated.

Check the Neck Size

When you’re adjusting the fit of your polo up top, make sure you don’t forget to check the neck. Guys with athletic builds often have thicker necks, and you don’t want your polo to be strangling you. This is a little easier to manage than shoulder and arm sizing, since you can simply button or unbutton as needed to get a comfortable fit.

 That being said, you want your polo to be comfortable to wear with just the top button open. Too much tighter than that and it may look like your polo is trying to throttle you. You do, however, want the polo to sit close to your chest, rather than hanging open at the front.

Look at the Buttons 

One great way to tell if your polo neck is the right size for you is to take a look at where the buttons stop. In general, you want the end of the button band to be right at the upper part of your armpits. Button bands that are longer than that can start to give a deep v-neck look that’s frighteningly reminiscent of the 1970s. 

You also want to make sure your buttons aren’t straining to cover your chest. As we mentioned, your polo should hug close to your chest, rather than hanging off of it. But if you get horizontal pull lines or gaps between your buttons, you need to go up a size, because your polo is too tight across your chest.

Get the Right Length

Now that the upper part of your polo is properly fit, it’s time to turn your attention to the hem. In general, you want your polo to hang a little bit past the waistband of your pants. It should still cover your midsection when you raise your arms up, but it shouldn’t completely cover your rear either.

If you plan to always keep your polo tucked in, you can get a style that has a slightly longer back hem than front hem. But if you want to rock a French tuck or leave your polo untucked entirely, get a style with an even hem. The shirt should hug close to your ribs and waist without pulling across your torso or hips.
